# Working with Settings

How to work with every setting of the Theme - Manager – search, sales channel, saving, cache and compiling.

All settings in the Theme - Manager are built the same way. Once you have understood one, you know them all: at the top is a header with search, documentation, support, the sales channel selection and the buttons for saving, and below it follow the fields of the setting. This page explains the controls you will find everywhere – and how your changes reach the shop.

You open a setting in the administration under **Content › Theme - Settings** with a click in the sidebar.

<figure><img src="https://3517456628-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FmlPb6ICG6kHEJhGjJ5wl%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-6aec3aa822e7a44b1818c248d0971c3c02b7c9d3%2Feinstellungen-bedienen-aufbau.webp?alt=media" alt="Layout of a setting, using Footer as an example"><figcaption><p>The layout of a setting – here the “Below the footer” tab of the “Footer” setting.</p></figcaption></figure>

<table><thead><tr><th width="287">Function</th><th>Description</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Header (1)</td><td>The name of the setting and all of its tools – see <strong>The header</strong>.</td></tr><tr><td>Tabs (2)</td><td>Extensive settings are spread across several tabs. A click switches the tab. Changes on other tabs are kept until you save.</td></tr><tr><td>Label and help text (3)</td><td>On the left it says what you are setting, with a short explanation in grey underneath.</td></tr><tr><td>Input (4)</td><td>On the right you set the value – depending on the setting, using a selection, a switch, a text field or a dedicated editor.</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="success" %}
You do not need to compile the settings of the Theme - Manager: a click on **Save** is enough. If compiling is needed after all – for example with your own SCSS code or with theme colours and fonts under **Edit theme** – the article for the setting says so explicitly.
{% endhint %}

## The header

<figure><img src="https://3517456628-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FmlPb6ICG6kHEJhGjJ5wl%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-7116da285e67d2e25d2857697eb8d44d66c00c2f%2Feinstellungen-bedienen-kopfzeile.webp?alt=media" alt="The header of a setting"><figcaption><p>The tools in the header.</p></figcaption></figure>

<table><thead><tr><th width="287">Function</th><th>Description</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Search (1)</td><td>Shows a search field that you can use to jump to another setting – see <strong>Searching settings</strong>.</td></tr><tr><td>Documentation (2)</td><td>Opens the documentation for this setting in a new browser tab.</td></tr><tr><td>Support (3)</td><td>Opens the support page through which you reach the developer.</td></tr><tr><td>Sales channel (4)</td><td>Determines for which sales channel you are editing the setting. The default is <strong>All Sales Channels</strong> – see <strong>Settings per sales channel</strong>.</td></tr><tr><td>Clear cache (5)</td><td>Empties your shop's cache so that you see your changes in the shop straight away – see <strong>Seeing changes in the shop immediately</strong>.</td></tr><tr><td>Compile Storefront (6)</td><td>Rebuilds the styling and scripts of the themes of all sales channels – see <strong>Compiling the storefront</strong>.</td></tr><tr><td>Save (7)</td><td>Saves your changes. Only then do they take effect in the shop. In the <strong>SCSS / JavaScript</strong> setting, the button is called <strong>Save &#x26; compile</strong>.</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="info" %}
For premium settings that you have not unlocked yet, the header only shows search, documentation and support. You can look at the setting itself but only edit it after unlocking – see **Premium Features**.

## Searching settings

1. In the header, click the magnifying glass (1). A search field (2) appears below the header.
2. Type part of the name, for example “pro”.
3. All matching settings (3) appear below the field. A click opens the setting you want.

<figure><img src="https://3517456628-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FmlPb6ICG6kHEJhGjJ5wl%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-c9b9f648d45d9f25849ff408048e3a1b602215f0%2Feinstellungen-bedienen-suche.webp?alt=media" alt="Searching settings"><figcaption><p>The search finds all settings whose name contains “pro”.</p></figcaption></figure>

The search finds settings by their name as it appears in the sidebar – not by individual fields. Another click on the magnifying glass hides the search field again.

The search at the top of the Shopware administration also finds the settings of the Theme - Manager.

## Settings per sales channel

If you run several sales channels, you can set most settings differently for each sales channel – for example a different footer for your B2B shop. To do this, you choose in the header which sales channel you are editing the setting for.

<figure><img src="https://3517456628-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FmlPb6ICG6kHEJhGjJ5wl%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-27d3648fa99323f34bc42c76c09a8ec416bd47ca%2Feinstellungen-bedienen-kanal-auswahl.webp?alt=media" alt="Selecting the sales channel" width="300"><figcaption><p>The sales channel selection in the header.</p></figcaption></figure>

<table><thead><tr><th width="287">Selection</th><th>Description</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>All Sales Channels (1)</td><td>The default. What you save here applies to every sales channel – except for fields to which you have given a value of their own in a sales channel.</td></tr><tr><td>A single sales channel (2)</td><td>What you save here applies to this sales channel only. Each field initially takes over the value from <strong>All Sales Channels</strong>. Only a field whose inheritance you remove gets a value of its own.</td></tr></tbody></table>

Your selection stays in place when you switch to another setting in the sidebar.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Save your changes before you switch the sales channel or the setting. Unsaved changes are lost without a prompt.
{% endhint %}

### Recognising inherited values

If you select a single sales channel, every field shows a chain icon: it takes over the value from **All Sales Channels**. As long as the chain is closed, the field is greyed out and locked.

<figure><img src="https://3517456628-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FmlPb6ICG6kHEJhGjJ5wl%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-5b41adc4800fb09d0401f621018d4f8ac2af8cd0%2Feinstellungen-bedienen-kanal-vererbt.webp?alt=media" alt="Inherited fields of a sales channel"><figcaption><p>For the sales channel “Storefront”, all fields take over the values from “All Sales Channels”.</p></figcaption></figure>

<table><thead><tr><th width="287">Function</th><th>Description</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Sales channel (1)</td><td>The sales channel you are currently editing.</td></tr><tr><td>Closed chain (2)</td><td>The field takes over the value from <strong>All Sales Channels</strong>. A click on it (<strong>Remove inheritance</strong>) releases the field so that you can set a value of its own for this sales channel.</td></tr><tr><td>Greyed-out field (3)</td><td>Shows the value that currently applies to this sales channel. You can only change it once you remove the inheritance.</td></tr><tr><td>Field without a chain (4)</td><td>Texts with a globe icon are snippets. They apply to all sales channels that use the same snippet set and therefore have no chain – see <strong>Texts and Translations</strong>.</td></tr></tbody></table>

### Setting a value of its own

1. In the header, select the sales channel.
2. At the field you want, click the closed chain. It now appears broken, and the field can be edited.
3. Set the value you want.
4. Click **Save**.

<figure><img src="https://3517456628-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FmlPb6ICG6kHEJhGjJ5wl%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-816fc9c3bf96622c711d4fe3a3531cf13ee2edf6%2Feinstellungen-bedienen-kanal-ueberschrieben.webp?alt=media" alt="A field with a value of its own for the sales channel"><figcaption><p>Only in the sales channel “Storefront” is the cookie link hidden – all other fields stay inherited.</p></figcaption></figure>

<table><thead><tr><th width="287">Function</th><th>Description</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Broken chain (1)</td><td>The field has a value of its own for this sales channel. A click on it (<strong>Restore inheritance</strong>) takes over the value from <strong>All Sales Channels</strong> again – see <strong>Back to the shared value</strong>.</td></tr><tr><td>Value of its own (2)</td><td>Applies to this sales channel only. In the example, <strong>Do not show</strong> hides the link to the cookie settings only in the storefront of this sales channel.</td></tr><tr><td>Still inherited (3)</td><td>All fields with a closed chain continue to take over the values from <strong>All Sales Channels</strong> – even if you change them there later.</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="info" %}
A field with a value of its own keeps that value even if you later change the same field under **All Sales Channels**. If it should take over the shared value again, restore the inheritance.
{% endhint %}

### Back to the shared value

1. In the header, select the sales channel.
2. At the field, click the broken chain (**Restore inheritance**). The field immediately shows the value from **All Sales Channels** again and is locked.
3. Click **Save**. From now on the shared value applies to this field again.

### Settings without a sales channel selection

For some settings the selection in the header is missing. They either apply to the whole shop, or you set the sales channel directly in the setting – for example on an individual entry. How that works in each case is explained in the article for the setting.

<table><thead><tr><th width="287">Group</th><th>Settings without a selection in the header</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Products</td><td>Product Attachments, Product Badges</td></tr><tr><td>Sales Promotion</td><td>Payment &#x26; Shipping</td></tr><tr><td>Advanced</td><td>Google Fonts</td></tr><tr><td>Developer</td><td>SCSS / JavaScript and Twig / Templates – both with their own selection <strong>All Sales Channels</strong> or a single sales channel in the setting –, Theme Inheritance</td></tr><tr><td>Premium</td><td>Surcharges, Cross-Selling Popup, Product Configurator</td></tr></tbody></table>

## Saving

You apply your changes with **Save** at the top right. The following applies:

* What is saved is saved for the selection in the header – for **All Sales Channels** or for the selected sales channel.
* Texts that you change through the globe icon are saved directly in the **Snippet** window. You do not have to save the setting for that.
* If saving does not work, a message with the cause appears at the top right.

[Texts and Translations](/theme-manager/en/building-blocks/texts-and-translations.md)
{% endcontent-ref %}

## Seeing changes in the shop immediately

Shopware delivers the pages of your shop from a cache. After saving, Shopware renews it automatically – but not immediately: in batches, after a few minutes depending on how your shop is set up. Until then your shop still shows the old state.

This is how you see the result straight away:

1. Save your changes.
2. In the header, click **Clear cache**. The messages “Clearing caches.” and “All caches cleared.” appear one after the other at the top right.
3. Reload the page in your shop.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Clear cache** empties the entire cache of your shop – just like the button of the same name in Shopware under **Settings › System › Caches & indexes**. The first few page views afterwards load a little more slowly because Shopware rebuilds the cache.
{% endhint %}

### Without compiling and without clearing the cache

Some settings empty the cache themselves when you save. For them, the change is visible in the shop immediately:

* **Twig / Templates:** Your templates need neither compiling nor **Clear cache**. After **Save**, the shop shows the override straight away.
* **Theme Inheritance:** The new order applies directly after **Save**.
* **Google Fonts:** Installing, removing and the selection of sales channels take effect immediately.

{% endcontent-ref %}

## Compiling the storefront

Shopware combines the styling (CSS) and the scripts (JavaScript) of your themes into finished files. This process is called compiling. **Compile Storefront** does that for the themes of all sales channels. At the top right, “Compilation Started” appears first and, after a moment, “Compilation Successful”. If compiling fails, the message names the cause – for example an error in your own SCSS code.

For the settings of the Theme - Manager you normally do not need this button. Only compile if an article explicitly says so.

### Save & compile in SCSS / JavaScript

Your own SCSS code only takes effect in the shop once the storefront has been compiled. In the **SCSS / JavaScript** setting, **Save & compile** (2) therefore saves your changes and compiles the storefront in one step – the **Compile Storefront** button does not exist there. As long as there are changes that have not yet been saved and compiled, the header shows the notice **Uncompiled changes pending** (1).

<figure><img src="https://3517456628-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FmlPb6ICG6kHEJhGjJ5wl%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-6dcc46c410d2c57c62469b0db44b3ec9e33ee525%2Feinstellungen-bedienen-unkompiliert.webp?alt=media" alt="Header of SCSS / JavaScript with a notice about uncompiled changes"><figcaption><p>The header of the “SCSS / JavaScript” setting with unsaved changes.</p></figcaption></figure>

## Ticking off settings

When you have finished a setting, you can tick it off in the sidebar. That way you keep track of what is still open while setting up.

## Getting help

The **Documentation** button in the header takes you to the matching page of this documentation. If you get stuck, **Support** gets you straight to the developer.
